What is an ADSL connection?

It is an always-available connection to the internet at a much higher speed than normal dial-up at a fixed monthly rate. With ADSL there is never a dial-up call charge component. It means you know exactly what your monthly expenditure on the Internet is, even if your kids spend lot of time on the Internet.

Do I need an extra line?

No - DSL turns an ordinary telephone line into a multi-tasking tool - talk on the phone or send a fax without affecting your bandwidth whilst you're online.

What do I need to have an always-on ADSL connection ?

Just like normal dial-up access, you need an ADSL enabled line from Telkom, (this comes in four different "speeds" - explained below) and you need a "username" and "password" linked to a bandwidth package which you get from CompuService Internet (available in different monthly membership options).

To summarise - You need:

a. an ADSL line from Telkom; and

b. ADSL membership from CompuService internet order now

Your Telkom ADSL line options are:

(Telkom) - HomeDSL 192

Aimed at the home it offers an always-available connection at a reasonable speed. It is priced at R270 per month. The download speed is 192kbps and upload is 64kbps.

(Telkom) - HomeDSL 384

This product is double the speed of HomeDSL192 and offers the same advantage. It is more suited for the person who requires a faster up-and-download speed. HomeDSL 384 offers a download at 384kbps and an upload at 128kbps. The cost is R359 per month.

(Telkom) - HomeDSL 512

This product is for the person who needs even more speed. It offers downloads at 512kbps and uploads at 286kbps. The cost is R477.

For business, Telkom offers

(Telkom) - BusinessDSL 512 at a cost of R477.
